April’s Chronic Illness Linkup

I found a cool gathering or linkup that happens every month on Twitter for Chronic Illness. It is hosted by ‘A Chronic Voice’ as far as I can tell, and connects chronic illness bloggers to have them write on five different topics for that month. You write about the different topics on your blog and then link the post to the running list. This could also be a great way for you all to get to know more about me. The linkup starts at the beginning of each month and ends at midnight Sidney time on the last day of the month. I thought it would be an interesting thing to try out! So here is April’s Linkup.

Topic 1: Tiring

Chronic Illness is an extremely tiring thing to deal with day after day. The most exhausting part of it for me, is to manage self care tasks. It feels like I am always taking showers, shaving, cutting my nails, and brushing my teeth. This is probably because these self care tasks take the most energy out of me compared to eating or watching T.V. It is important to stay on top of self care tasks for a number of reasons, but especially because they can be easily postponed when you have chronic illness. I also have difficulties staying on top off, or to be real, keeping up with, laundry. There are just so many things that are more important to me to spend my energy or spoons on. Topic 2: Educating

I have recently embarked on the adventure of educating others about chronic and mental health conditions. For those of you who do not know, I started this blog at the end of February of this year. I write about the struggles I have with mental health and chronic illness. I also react to news stories, good or bad, relating to both, like the Dr. Phil disability scandal. In my passion to continue to break down the stigma surrounding all of these conditions, I partnered with the Chronic Disease Coalition, whose goal is to change the laws and protect the rights of chronic illness patients. Topic 3: Receiving 

I receive many negative symptoms from my Chronic illnesses and it can be quite frustrating. The pain, lack of energy, difficulty with mobility, etc. wears on a person. However, I do believe that I also receive many benefits from you all. My passion for running this blog creates a purpose for me to wake up in the morning. I have something to do that day that is not only for the good of others, but is part of slowly changing the world. Since starting this blog, I have received much more than I believe that I have given, because of the many beautiful people in the chronic illness community. I love you guys!

Topic 4: Giving

As with receiving, there is always a good and a bad type of giving. However, I feel like in this month especially, I have been a good giver, so to speak. Writing on my blog helps me to give to others what they may be needing. I always tell people that they can ask to talk about anything on my blog or to me privately. On a personal note, I have given to myself a lot recently. Writing on my blog has proven to be therapeutic to me. I am able to put my problems in the perspective of another person’s. It is much easier for me to give advice and problem solve that way. I do it so often, that most times I don’t realize that it is happening.

Topic 5: Quieting

I love the quiet! With my anxiety and sensory overload issues, loud and unexpected noises are difficult for me to process and often change the rest of the day. I have found recently that during the evening, I like to take an hour or two to go into my bedroom and have time to decompress before finishing my evening routine. Chronic illness and mental health conditions have proven to be a very difficult adversary for me to deal with. However, having the ability and opportunity to quiet my being helps substantially.
